What your doctor will never tell you about tinnitus relief
Have you ever spoken to someone about your tinnitus only to hear, the reply “Oh, I have that too!” Do you ever wonder why you seem to be constantly at your wits end with your tinnitus, when others seem blissfully unaware or untroubled?
Well the good news is you’re not alone.
So what is it that separates those who suffer from those who don’t? And why is it you are still struggling and suffering from tinnitus? Research tells us that it has nothing to do with the volume, pitch, tone and type of your tinnitus that separates the two groups. But everything to do with one word and that one word is “perception”.
This is a very important fact, which many GP’s fail to address when dealing with a tinnitus-suffering patient. Possibly because your doctor doesn’t know that perception is at the root of your suffering in the first place.
When you explore the dynamics of your own perception, the why, the how and the when, you’ll soon be on a fast track to solving the tinnitus-suffering puzzle and gaining much needed tinnitus relief.
On my journey to help those who are suffering from tinnitus I’ve come to the conclusion that those who “Suffer” from tinnitus (myself included) are naturally more in tune, hyperaware or have excessive nervous energy. This is not a bad thing either as it does come with certain advantages. It is a personality type and can be easily “tuned down” so to speak.
Are you a hypersensitive type?
So when it comes to understanding tinnitus suffering and ultimately finding tinnitus relief we have to look at the mechanics of the ear and the purpose behind hearing and then go about adjusting and calming down our own intrinsic response to the stimuli.
The truth of the matter is that our ears work all the time and only relax once they have latched onto harmless background noise. This is true of all of our sensory instruments, they are all constantly at work behind the scenes and like an internal thermostat relax only when we are in between two base levels of comfort.
We feel safe and relaxed when our sense perceptions are biologically comfortable, familiar and relate us to our environment. It’s an evolutionary process, which has kept us safe since the dawn of humankind.
In complete silence, most people’s hearing intensifies, searching for sound to latch on to in order to give us bearing, balance and reference. Eventually this struggle to find sound leads one to become hypersensitive and will start the process of detecting internal nervous information. This is what is called “hypersensitivity.”
Hypersensitivity could be at the root of your tinnitus issues
It’s this process which activates a stress response in your system, and increases your internal auditory hypersensitivity.
Right this second, you might not feel anxious, but your central nervous system is idling in a constant state of red-alert. Under the surface, your whole system has locked itself into a state of emergency, as if it senses that there is a threat that is ever-present. This is a very subtle and silent process and it’s called stress!
When stress releases hormones, most notably adrenaline. These chemicals keep your entire system locked into a stress state.
So why does your body get into this state in the first place?
If you can learn to recognize the actions, thoughts and behaviors, which lead you towards being a more reactive and hypersensitive individual, it stand to reason that we can then take action to prevent them.
The key to understanding Tinnitus relief for the vast majority of people is learning to understand your body’s relationship with stress. Stress has many guises, it isn’t just psychological, it’s environmental, it’s biological and it’s metabolic, and we all react differently to it. Understanding the many subtle ways in which your mind and body are bombarded with stress and learning how to dissipate them will ultimately help you in finding tinnitus relief.
When you have high levels of stress hormones surging through your system, your body senses an emergency. Although you might not be aware of it, when your senses become heightened, your sense of hearing becomes acute. Does this sound familiar? (Not being able to stop focusing on your tinnitus.)
Adrenaline served a purpose when running from this chap
With the increase of stress hormone levels, you become much more reactive to the world around you. This is an ancestral survival mechanism that has evolved into your nervous system, for protection, so when danger appeared, you didn’t have to think about protecting yourself, it was an automatic response.
This was once far more useful than it is today in our safe, efficient modern societies.
The onset of noticeable tinnitus and the subsequent suffering for many is bound up with this response. This is why most people start complaining about noises in their head after periods of high levels of stress. Too much stress, releasing cortisol and adrenaline, over a long period of time this causes a chain reaction of metabolic events, inflammation being one of them, this can cause a myriad of autoimmune conditions along with tinnitus.
So what about the hard of hearing or those with noise related damage? If one is hearing impaired, partially deaf or completely deaf, every time you strain to hear you are increasing your hypersensitivity. When the brain does not get enough information from the external world, it tries to increase its receptivity by raising the inner volume. This is why the vast majority of people with hearing loss quite often experience tinnitus.
Getting to Grips with Stress Hormones
There is a place for stress hormones. These hormones, which heighten our awareness, also save our lives. Understanding them, controlling them is a vital tool towards Tinnitus relief and our general health. It’s a proven fact that acute stress or shock, which produces large amounts of adrenaline, can literally divert blood flow from the cochlea and make you temporarily deaf! So can chronic inflammation cause similar problems?
Stress hormones cause you to become hyper aware to nervous impulses that you normally would not pick up or respond to. If your adrenaline and cortisol levels were to balance out, your sensory perception would become less acute, and your Tinnitus would ease.
Tinnitus can be a classic symptom that your nervous system is taxed to the max. The alarm bells are ringing and for a good reason. Finding those reasons soon stops the ringing. Tinnitus won’t let go of you until you learn to let go of it.
