No doubt you’ve heard the words “there is no cure for tinnitus” not only are these be very damaging words to hear, they are also simply not true.
Stop telling people there is no cure for tinnitus
I’ve suffered from debilitating tinnitus myself for many years (my story) and I’ve worked with dozens of people suffering from tinnitus over the last two years and it simply is not the case for most people.
Now, it’s true to say that there is no quick fix cure for tinnitus, no magic pill, drug, vitamin or herb that you can take one day and the next day your tinnitus is gone.
And for some people their tinnitus might actually be caused by a prescription medication or from an anatomical abnormality, which they might have. In these cases the tinnitus might vanish once these issues are addressed with your doctor.
But for the vast majority of long-term tinnitus sufferers they might simply walk away from a doctor’s office feeling stuck with this condition for the rest of their lives.
However do not despair there are things, which you can do today that can get you on a path to a successful habituation in a relatively short amount of time.
But first I want you to ask yourself a really important question. It’s estimated that over 50 million people have tinnitus worldwide, but why is it that only a small percentage actually suffer from tinnitus?
Now before you say, well mine is louder, research now tells us that this isn’t the case, the way you react to the noise in your ears has nothing to do with the tone, volume, pitch or type of your tinnitus. It might surprise you to learn that it has everything to do with the way in which your nervous system reacts to the stimuli.
You see tinnitus is a subjective emotional condition, which no two people experience the same. One can experience tinnitus and it simply does not bother them, whilst another can experience the same noise and it’s the burden of their lives. We are all wired differently some have a more subdued nervous system whilst others can be hypersensitive. There are pros and cons to both types, however tinnitus sufferers tend to share some commonalities and always lean towards the hypersensitive personality type. (If you think you might be hypersensitive click here)
Hypersensitive people tend to have a harder time with tinnitus
So, in essence, we can override your tinnitus simply by changing your emotional response. And as a side note, this is why tinnitus sufferers are prescribed antidepressants as a solution to their tinnitus woes. The antidepressants will not change anything regarding your tinnitus, the tinnitus is still there, and only thing that has changed is your perception, so this is certainly no cure for tinnitus. All of this you can do without the use of powerful mind-altering drugs!
Now, this whole process isn’t quiet as simple as it sounds, however it’s not that hard either, it just takes time, a little education and some dedication.
As a side note, I don’t really like to use and I often withdraw from using the words cure for tinnitus. I feel it conjures up an illusionary idea that something outside of yourself will cure your tinnitus. The truth of the matter is, you cure yourself of your tinnitus suffering. I prefer to use the words, habituate, override, or the phrase listen beyond tinnitus.
How do we do it?
Through a unique, comprehensive system of complimentary therapies we learn to reduce the bodies overwhelming nervous response to the stimuli.
The speed with which one habituates of course varies from individual to individual, but it’s safe to say that within a relatively short amount of time the tinnitus sufferer learns to what we call “Listen beyond tinnitus”
So before telling people with tinnitus that they are essentially doomed to a life of insidious ringing, remind them that there are techniques, methods, and lifestyle modifications that can get them on a path to peace and quiet once more, and in a relatively short amount of time.
