Stop Looking For a Cure for Tinnitus
(You’ll just end up disappointed)
A question I hear all the time is, “What is the best tinnitus cure?” Seriously If I had the answer to that question I’d be as rich as Bill Gates.
I stand by my conviction, which is, if anyone says they have the cure for tinnitus be very cautious indeed.
Personally I try very hard not to use the word cure when it comes to tinnitus, I find it misleading and somewhat cruel. As yet there is no magical pill or miracle solution, which will banish your tinnitus for good.
So, we have to settle for the next best thing, (and possibly the only thing) which is learning to listen beyond our tinnitus.
“Easier said than done” I hear you say!
Well, before I continue, please let me ask you two questions and perhaps help put some perspective on this principle.
An ENT pitted two life-changing questions to me many years ago and subsequently these two questions changed my life with tinnitus forever.
“With over 20 million people in the US afflicted with tinnitus, why is it only a very small percentage actually suffer from tinnitus?” (Believe it or not the vast majority either naturally habituate in a short amount of time or are completely oblivious of the offending noise.)
“So what is the difference between those who just aren’t bothered and those who suffer?”
Well according to research, it has nothing to do with the volume, tone or type of tinnitus you are afflicted with. Rather it has everything to do with your nervous system and how you emotionally respond to the offending stimuli.
So, with that said, what did I do to pacify and override my tinnitus and go from a tinnitus sufferer to someone who was no longer affected by it?
With me it started with getting my facts straight about the TRUE origins of my tinnitus SUFFERING in the first place. (There’s a difference between having tinnitus and suffering from tinnitus) And more often than not it comes down to how an individual perceives the noise.
Incorrect information regarding your tinnitus (sure ask, take my miracle pill and tinnitus will be gone in a week) often leads to an intensification and an exaggeration of symptoms and thoughts, resulting in a dysfunctional thinking pattern regarding tinnitus, These negative and damaging patterns only serve to increase the hopeless emotions associated with tinnitus, further strengthening distress and preventing acceptance, which perhaps counter intuitively does lead to eventual relief.
The main steam approach to tinnitus and its supposed cures tend to revolve around viewing tinnitus as an isolated phenomenon. And we spend most of our time running around in circles looking at it in a cause and effect manner. The truth of the matter is your tinnitus might simply be caused by damage or age and isn’t going to go away with some herb. BUT that isn’t to say you have to suffer, no quite the opposite.
The fist step towards banishing tinnitus from your life is acceptance.
If tinnitus suffering is based on perception, then it stands to reason that tinnitus suffering is a subjective emotional condition, with its roots deeply grounded in our nervous system. When I say tinnitus is a subjective condition; I mean everyone out of the 50 million worldwide afflicted experience it differently, otherwise millions and millions would be suffering just like you are, but we know that is not the case, remember only a small percentage actually suffer from tinnitus, the vast majority are either oblivious or self habituate in a relatively short amount of time.
So, the most important question a tinnitus sufferer must ask him or herself is ultimate “How have those who have tinnitus but don’t suffer managed to do so? And how can I be like them?”
