“One study found that patients who believed their tinnitus was out of their control showed the slowest progression to recovery!”
We hear doctors telling a familiar tale of the patient who once informed that they have a serious illness, slump in their chair, the color drains from their face as if defeated already. On the other hand another patient might have the opposite reaction, determined to overcome at all costs.
Freedom from tinnitus could be as simple as thinking it
We often associate the saying “Mind over matter” with eastern philosophy, eastern medicine or an old wizened sage who lives in a cave. True or not this ideology runs in contrast to conventional, western medicine and thinking where, the pharmaceutical and science are god.
However, in the last decade the tide has begun to turn on conventional western medicine and western medical thinking. Of course no one is denying the massive leaps in human health that have been made from science and conventional medicine in the last 100 years.
But over the last decade we have seen pharmaceutical companies become massive monopolies, which raises the quest as to weather they have our best interests at heart or they have their best fiscal interests at heart.
An interesting statistic to consider is that in the last 100 years life altering breakthroughs in human health and disease prevention have come about either by accident or by scientists working passionately and obsessively alone. Not from pharmaceutical sponsored medical schools or research centers. It’s not really in their best interests to “Cure” you it’s in their best interests to treat your symptoms.
I’m not slamming pharmaceutical companies, there isn’t one of us who hasn’t benefited from them or will at some in our lives. However, we have to look at the lifestyle advice (or lack of) that is perpetrated and forms the basis of pharmaceutical sponsored western medical advice that exists today.
Which brings me to the catch phrase “Mind over matter” three simple, yet potentially powerful words.
So how is this associated with tinnitus treatments? Well, we know there isn’t a cure for tinnitus and we know that tinnitus is an associated symptom not a direct, standalone disease. And that although annoying our tinnitus is a subjective and emotional phenomenon and is subject to how we decide or train ourselves to perceive it.
There are many different factors that come into play and influence the course of our tinnitus and tinnitus help. Firstly we must consider our own personal medical conditions, then high on the list of importance is our stress levels. Also we must consider our social support, all of which have an impact on our overall tinnitus health and prognosis.
Tinnitus can be greatly reduced by changing simply ones perception of the condition
We have a tendency in the west not to truly believe something unless it’s been officially validated by western medicine.
But in the last ten years we have received an overwhelming amount of research and evidence which points towards the fact that we have more control over how we heal, feel, cope and overcome our tinnitus than what we may have originally thought.
New reports suggest and validate that the old clichés “Mind over matter” “you are what you think” “you are what you eat” might have more to do with our recovery than we may have originally thought.
We are finding that what you think about your illness matters just as much, if not more, in determining your health outcomes. And is as important as what the pharmaceutical company or your doctor can provide for you.
According to recent research the perception of an individuals illness bears a direct relationship to several important health outcomes, including mortality.
In fact the research goes on to suggest that how a person views his or her symptoms may play a bigger role in determining the overall outcome of the actual disease as a whole, despite pharmaceutical intervention.
It is believed that our illness perceptions emerge out of our beliefs about our condition, our beliefs about personal power and what limitations or disability means in the context of our lives.
Just take a moment and truly think about how you perceive your tinnitus and your health (both physical and emotional) in relation to your tinnitus.
How do you truly perceive your tinnitus? Do you truly believe your tinnitus will ever calm down? Do you believe it will only get worse? Do you truly think you’ll ever get used to your tinnitus. Do you believe there is tinnitus help? Or a solid tinnitus treatment available?
We might be harboring beliefs about our tinnitus causes, its duration, its impact on our family or how we can or cannot control or overcome it. But ultimately the perception of our selves, our condition and how tinnitus fits in with our life will guide the future decisions we make about living with tinnitus.
The power of our perception towards our tinnitus goes even further in so far as to suggest that the effective tinnitus treatment plans available are more influenced by our attitude than just having a competent physician.
Doctors or primary care providers can dramatically increase tinnitus help by asking the correct questions
A doctor can make an accurate diagnosis and suggest an excellent tinnitus treatment but if his or her conventional therapeutic suggestions do not fit with the patient’s view of their own tinnitus, they are unlikely to stick at it and will eventually succumb to failure. Any treatment that does not take into consideration or at least try and work with the patient’s perception of their condition is highly flawed.
At tinnitus retrain we understand that the principle of condition perception is the first and foremost step in a successful tinnitus recovery. Incorporating some simple techniques and lifestyle changes into your daily life aids in creating a powerful paradigm shift. This unique approach to your tinnitus will have a drastic effect on your long-term prognosis.
Research shows a drastic change in patients when physicians are given the opportunity to identify and correct inaccurate prognosis and recovery beliefs.
Once a physician has analyzed a patient’s illness perceptions the physician can try to influence and goad those beliefs into a direction that is more compatible to successful tinnitus recovery.
Until that day when the physician can offer tools to improve your perception, which will result in your overall improvement and tinnitus recovery, we’ll have to rely on good old self-help, research and education.
These logical conversations, which all heath care providers should be having with their tinnitus suffering patients will ultimately help the practitioner identify patients who are at risk of coping poorly with the demands of their tinnitus.
Without a doubt educational intervention taken by your physician complete with techniques and lifestyle modifications can radically improve negative tinnitus beliefs leading to an improvement over a relatively short term.
An emotionally subjective condition like tinnitus should be relatively easy to treat
We know the power of developing these mindsets and we know the effectiveness of these simple techniques, methods and lifestyle modifications for treating tinnitus. But did you know that tinnitus could quite easily be the poster child of psycho-educational techniques like these, due primarily to the fact that it is an emotionally subjective condition and a condition, which would be relatively easy to measure results with.
But until we can reach a large enough number of patients who are suffering with this clear cut message many will just needlessly continue to suffer in silence, without knowing such a simple tinnitus solution exists.
I’m not talking of some miracle cure or some quick fix think positive and everything will be ok over night solution. I’m talking about practical, powerful, easy to memorize and implement techniques, which over time will drastically improve the quality of your life as a tinnitus sufferer.
If you’re suffering from tinnitus you might want to consider using mind over matter techniques complemented with a lifestyle modification program. Thousands have seen results, the upside is high and the downside is none existent. So why not give it a go?
