Many tinnitus treatments revolve purely around the masking of the noise or the masking of the psychological ramifications due to the high pitched noise in ears. It’s either a masking device to counter the high pitch noise in the ears and or antidepressants or anti anxiety medication to numb you to the constant high pitch ringing in ears. Neither of these processes ever gets to the bottom of ones tinnitus suffering, but I guess as the saying goes “ignorance is bliss” and as a former tinnitus suffer I can attest, anything is better than putting up with the constant ringing in the ears. As we know anxiety and tinnitus go hand in hand. What we do not know is what came first? Which brings me to the question are anxious people more prone to tinnitus or does tinnitus make someone more prone to anxiety? Read my article on tinnitus and hypersensitivity
One thing I have learn during my own personal journey with tinnitus is masking devices and powerful mind altering drugs are all good and well for “brushing a problem under the carpet” so to speak, but you are creating an even bigger problem for yourself down the road (aka medication dependence and the dependence on external stimuli) And by not addressing the “how” and the “why” you ended up with tinnitus and why you are “suffering” from tinnitus (yes, there’s a big difference between having tinnitus and suffering from tinnitus) Want to know the difference?
As far as tinnitus treatment goes exposure and mindfulness exercises totally changed my life. Believe me when I say I’d tried everything to get rid of or ignore my tinnitus. Although Tinnitus exposure might seem counter intuitive, acceptance and mindfulness techniques totally work wonders over time for me, especially with my tinnitus and anxiety.
Controlled exposure helps the mind detach from the tinnitus and reengage in life. In theory the process does exactly the same as what being on antidepressants does (alters your perception) only the difference is, you guessed it, the natural method takes longer. But, the positive is that you don’t have nasty and potentially expensive pharmaceutical addiction, and you get to keep your personality! True tinnitus habituation comes from exposure and nothing more. The results of controlled exposure and the mindfulness techniques are permanent, you’ve trained your brain to rewire it’s response to tinnitus and empowered yourself in the process.
At TRS we use the physical body as a refocusing tool and a means to dissipate stress, anxiety and disturbances due to your tinnitus. When tinnitus habituation is viewed in this way the techniques and methods in the Tinnitus Retrain System, you learn the skills to listen beyond your tinnitus and take back the life you’ve been missing out on.
Is this tinnitus treatment a cure for high pitched noise in the ears or tinnitus? Well, we don’t claim to be a miracle “quick fix” cure for tinnitus, if you believe such a thing exists, then good luck to you. We have helped many, many people go from tinnitus misery and suffering to freedom and control. Eventual tinnitus habituation due to exposure and mindfulness is safe and natural. However I do always recommend anyone who has anxiety and tinnitus or psychological disturbances due to their tinnitus to consult their GP or health care provider.
