As a former tinnitus sufferer I know that tinnitus sufferers spend a substantial amount of time focusing on precisely what they no longer want to focus on…. Their tinnitus!
The irony of wishing you were not so consumed by this insidious noise is that you’re consumed by this insidious noise. The wish for some peace ultimately comes down to a choice, followed by some education and training of course.
Just Drop it
“Just drop it” That’s the response the Buddhist monk gives when asked, “what should I do with this hot coal that I’m holding on to?” Simple and logical. Whereas a western psychologist’s response might be “why are you holding it? How long have you held it for? What do you think it means? Do you really want to let go of it? Shall we talk more about it?”
What I’m trying to say is that we tend to over complicate things for ourselves, look for too many reasons as to why and why not. Perhaps the best answer is to just “Let it go” But we in the west tend to fall into the trap of thinking nothing is easy and it must be complicated if a doctor can’t tell me how to get rid of this tinnitus?
We need to take a deep breath, take a step back from ourselves and begin to view our condition objectively and realize that our relationship with the noise is that of a subjective one. When we can separate ourselves from our situation we begin to see
Opportunity to look for breaks in the proverbial clouds of tinnitus suffering.
Catch a fleeting glimpse of the mind beyond tinnitus
Perhaps these moments arrive when we are totally engaged in a hobby or our job or conversing with friends or cooking with a loved one. These moments give us an opportunity to catch a fleeting glimpse of the peace and tranquility that is abstract from the internal ringing and buzzing going on inside our ears whilst we are focused on it.
There are some simple exercises that one can start practicing today which will gradually open up this window of awareness which will expand over time until eventually your tinnitus could be just nothing more than a slight background irritation.
This is just a short blog post, some food for thought as you will. Next week, I’ll give you my top 5 methods of how to begin separating your mind and nervous systems response from the constant buzzing in your ears, and how to totally divert that focus and energy which you have for your tinnitus and transform your life with a fresh new perspective using a far more holistic, supportive and whole body inclusive mind set.
It’s easier than you think, you’ve just got to drop it and believe!
