Are there food to avoid with tinnitus? This is a frequent question I get from those playing detective regarding their tinnitus issues. It’s a very reasonable question and a logical path to go down. However very rarely does anyone find a particular culprit that triggers or stops his or her tinnitus (other than too much caffeine) so why is this? (Blog post one coffee and tinnitus)
Food doesn’t compartmentalize
Looking for foods that either cause tinnitus or eradicate tinnitus isn’t looking at the full holistic picture nutrition plays on your entire body. Foods that are generally considered bad for our overall health like trans fats, too much sugar, too much salt, additives, saturated fats aren’t just bad for our hearts or our waistline, they are bad for every single cell, vessel, tube, nook and cranny in the body. Generally causing constriction and inflammation to the entire organism. So, you could possible say that these foods don’t cause tinnitus but they certainly create an environment were tinnitus could be exaggerated or enhanced. Or make you sick with something else so as to need medication, which then causes tinnitus. Or these foods raise blood pressure, which is causing tinnitus. Unnatural overtly processed foods contribute to many of our problems. A bad diet can contribute to adrenal stress, stimulation and inflammation all of which also play a hand in tinnitus. So yes, there are foods to avoid for tinnitus, but these foods should be avoided with or without tinnitus.
I’m not one to promote a super restrictive lifestyle, I believe in moderation and the middle way. But if I were to give anyone any advice on foods to avoid for tinnitus, the advice would be the same for any condition you may be suffering from. And that is eating as much of the right foods as you want! Avoid processed rubbish, avoid excess meat and dairy, avoid too much artificial sugar and cut way down on sodium. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, starches, rice, and pasta, enjoy one coffee a day and enjoy a glass of wine.
Balance
However, the more restrictive and uptight you’re the more you also contribute to internal stress, the more you hyper-focus on tinnitus the more you contribute to constriction and dis-ease in other ways. So, eat well, eat naturally, but don’t forget the pleasures of life.
I like to say live life like a Mediterranean when it comes to food. Enjoy plenty of salads with olive oil, vegetables, nuts, seeds, pasta, rice and fish. Enjoy cooking with natural foods and enjoy eating with friends. If you genuinely have a food allergy then obviously the situation changes, avoid those foods you know you’re allergic too.
But otherwise, just keep your diet as close to natural as possible and that goes for people suffering from tinnitus or without tinnitus.
Time better spent
Instead of focusing on external sources as the culprit of your tinnitus try spending your time learning to train your brain to overcome tinnitus by rewiring a new response. And of course eat well, sleep well, love well, laugh lots, try not to become hyper focused on the ringing in your ears.
I’m not diminishing the annoyance and troubles of tinnitus, I’ve truly been there, I’ve felt the despair, I’ve chased the causes and all I can say is until you’ve confronted your own emotional response to the noise, you’re like a dog chasing its own tail.
Take a step back; do not become overtly focused on foods to avoid for tinnitus. Try looking at tinnitus subjectively and learn to overcome your condition regardless of any external circumstances. You can blame food or look for an answer in food if you wish, but there is a simpler way, a way less restrictive, quicker and more enjoyable. Rewire your response and get on with enjoying life!
